Year R - Wrens
Welcome to Year R. We are a class of 24 very confident, happy and independent children who follow a play based curriculum covering 7 areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Art and Design.
Wrens learn through their games and wherever their imagination takes them. Learning takes place predominantly through child-initiated activities, while adult-led activities teach children specific skills including phonics, reading, handwriting, number recognition and counting. Children learn through continuous provision of a range of indoor and outdoor activities, which include painting, art and craft, role-play, mark making and writing, number, shape, space and measures, ICT, water and sand, a mud kitchen, construction, music and physical activities. The continuous provision is linked to the children’s interests. Topics have included Pirates, Dinosaurs, Space, All About Me, Superheroes, People Who Help Us and The Seaside. As well as continuous access to bikes, scooters, skipping ropes, hoops, bats, balls and large construction materials, Wrens also have P.E twice a week. Outdoor games teach children ball skills, hand eye coordination, moving in different ways and team skills while indoor PE develops balance, coordination and strength through dance and use of the apparatus.
Every day in Wrens is a new experience and adventure. So, when they say they have done nothing, or just played all day, they have actually been learning to read, write and count while searching for dinosaurs, being superheroes, flying to space or sailing the seven seas in search of treasure!
